Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio mourns with the Sampson Udo Etuk family of Etinan and that of the Taylors of Ile-Iluji of Ondo State on the passing on of Rev (Dr) Mrs Irene Ufok Taylor at the age of 84.

Madam Taylor co-founded in the 1960s Nka Ikemesit Iban Ibibio, Lagos, till date a vibrant body committed to philanthropy, communal self-help and the preservation and promotion of the very best of virtues and legacies of the Ibibio womanhood in South Western Nigeria.

Mma was born in Etinan, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria to Elder Thomas Morgan Udo Etuk (then Supervisor of Qua Ibo Schools) and Mrs Annie T.M.U. Etuk. After Primary education at John Kirk Memorial School, Etinan and Grace Bill Memorial Girls School, Eket she proceeded to the prestigious Queens’ College, Lagos.

Her sheer brilliance earned her a Cambridge School Certificate with exemption from the London Matriculation enabling her to proceed to study Pathology and Pharmacy in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. Upon graduation she made a career as a Pharmacist in the best of hospitals in Nigeria and abroad.

She married and had children with a veteran Nigerian Diplomat, Ambassador Victor Adebayo Taylor from Ondo State.

Mma’s sojourn in countries like Spain, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Finland, England, Switzerland and U.S.A. sharpened her resolve to work to make a difference in the lives of her people back in then South Eastern State. This gave birth to Nka Ikemesit Iban which was conceived to cater for women from the entirety of the South Eastern State. Mrs Taylor’s job in this self-imposed mission was made extremely challenging by the centripetal forces and tendencies which have today manifested in the full blown artificial segregation we find today amongst the Ibibio, Annang, Efik and Oron nationalities.

In her later years Mrs Taylor studied to acquire a Doctorate Degree in Theology and Counselling. As an erudite scholar and prolific writer Rev (Dr) Irene Taylor had authored over ten inspiring books such as Christian Counselling; The Christian and Sanctification, Effectual Prayer Pleading The Promises of God, etc, etc.

Mma was in 2013 nominated unanimously by all the organs of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pan-Ibibio Socio-cultural organization having previously been selected as an awardee of the organization in more than one occasion.

As a worthy mother that she was and together with other like-minded Ibibio Women Dr (Mrs) Taylor donated in 2011 a prime piece of landed property complete with titles and mutually acceptable Memorandum of Understanding executed for the purpose of developing this site to actualize the dreams of the founding mothers of Nka Ikemesit Iban Ibibio. This site is currently work in progress in Lagos.

According to a funeral programme released by the family, there will be Service of Songs in her Lagos residence on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 there will be wake keep in Etinan on Friday, February 17 while interment takes place on Saturday, February 18 in Etinan.
